Mr. Jerome “Jerry” Johnson Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday February 18, 2023 at his Lubbock residence. Family will be receive friends 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. for a visitation at First United Methodist Church in Ropesville, located at 808 Arnett Ave with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. with Rev. John Ohlig and Pastor Bill Titus officiating.
Jerry was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Blanche and Jerome Johnson while his Dad, a coal miner, was away fighting WW II. He put himself through the University of Alabama working a semester at the Army Missile Command and going to school the next. It was there he met and married his wife of 58 years, Marie Yeatman Johnson. They had two children, Anna and John. He brought his family to Texas in the 80s and together they put both children through graduate school with unwavering support and encouragement.
Over the years he yelled for the Crimson Tide every single football season. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, boating, canoeing and a fireside chat. He loved to be fed heartily by his wife and sit with her every evening. Rhymes and jokes and conversation came easily to him, as did laughter. Fixing things like engines and motors were simple chores to him and he was glad to tinker with his tools anytime.
A lifelong Catholic he attended mass every single Sunday. He also gathered many good, good friends along his life’s journey with whom he shared meals, stories and adventures. As an engineer, he was a weapons specialist and designed many a missile and weapon system for the great USA.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, his son Jerome “John” Johnson III and his wife Nicole Johnson, his daughter Anna Johnson Ricker and her husband Phil Ricker and seven grandchildren, Philip Ricker and his wife Brianna Ricker, John Ricker, Mary Ricker, Rebecca Johnson, Chloe Johnson and Shannon Johnson.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the University of Alabama Jerome M. Johnson Scholarship. Thank you for your kind contribution.
